Part 5. Services and registries · lesson 23 of 40

The action service: opening views and navigating

After this lesson you can: Open any view or action from a component, and react to what happens when it closes.

Written against Odoo 19.0 and 18.0. Last checked 2026-10-09.

The action service is how a component sends the user somewhere.

setup() {
    this.action = useService("action");
}

Opening one record

this.action.doAction({
    type: "ir.actions.act_window",
    res_model: "account.move",
    res_id: 42,
    views: [[false, "form"]],
    target: "current",
});

views is a list of [view_id, view_type]. false as the id means โ€œthe default view for this modelโ€, which is almost always what you want.

There is a shorthand for exactly this case:

this.action.doAction({
    type: "ir.actions.act_window",
    res_model: "account.move",
    res_id: 42,
    views: [[false, "form"]],
}, {
    onClose: () => this.reload(),
});

Opening a filtered list

this.action.doAction({
    type: "ir.actions.act_window",
    name: "Overdue invoices",
    res_model: "account.move",
    domain: [
        ["move_type", "=", "out_invoice"],
        ["payment_state", "!=", "paid"],
        ["invoice_date_due", "<", today],
    ],
    views: [[false, "list"], [false, "form"]],
    context: { search_default_filter_overdue: 1 },
});

name becomes the breadcrumb. Set it, or the user sees a generic title and cannot tell where they are.

context keys beginning search_default_ activate filters already defined in the search view, which is cleaner than widening the domain because the user can then see and remove the filter.

This is the single most useful thing a dashboard tile does: every number should open the records behind it. A figure the user cannot click to verify is a figure they will not trust.

By XML id

await this.action.doAction("account.action_move_out_invoice_type");

With extra context or domain:

await this.action.doAction("account.action_move_out_invoice_type", {
    additionalContext: { search_default_partner_id: partnerId },
});

Prefer the XML id when the action already exists. You inherit its views, filters and access, and you do not duplicate a definition that may change.

In a dialog

this.action.doAction({
    type: "ir.actions.act_window",
    res_model: "res.partner",
    res_id: partnerId,
    views: [[false, "form"]],
    target: "new", // opens as a modal
}, {
    onClose: (result) => this.reload(),
});

target: "new" is how wizards appear. onClose fires when the dialog closes, whatever closed it, which makes it the right place to refresh.

Getting something back from a wizard

The standard round trip. Python returns an action to open the wizard, the wizard does its work and returns something, onClose receives it.

class InvoiceWizard(models.TransientModel):
    _name = 'owl.course.wizard'

    date = fields.Date(required=True)

    def action_apply(self):
        self.ensure_one()
        # do the work
        return {'type': 'ir.actions.act_window_close', 'infos': {'applied': True}}
this.action.doAction({
    type: "ir.actions.act_window",
    res_model: "owl.course.wizard",
    views: [[false, "form"]],
    target: "new",
}, {
    onClose: (infos) => {
        if (infos?.applied) {
            this.notification.add("Applied", { type: "success" });
            this.reload();
        }
    },
});

The infos dictionary is how a wizard tells the caller what happened. Without it, onClose cannot distinguish โ€œthe user did the thingโ€ from โ€œthe user pressed escapeโ€, and refreshing on both is the usual lazy compromise.

Reports

this.action.doAction({
    type: "ir.actions.report",
    report_type: "qweb-pdf",
    report_name: "account.report_invoice",
    context: { active_ids: [invoiceId], active_model: "account.move" },
});

Or, more simply, call a Python method that returns report_action and pass the result to doAction. That keeps the report name in Python where it belongs.

Server actions and URLs

await this.action.doAction("my_module.action_server_do_thing");

this.action.doAction({
    type: "ir.actions.act_url",
    url: "/web/content/42?download=true",
    target: "self",
});

Reloading the current view

await this.action.doAction({ type: "ir.actions.client", tag: "reload" });

Heavy, and usually avoidable. If you are inside a viewโ€™s own component, that view has a load or model.load you should use instead. Reloading the whole client throws away breadcrumbs and scroll position.

Restoring and the breadcrumb

this.action.restore(); // back to the previous breadcrumb
this.env.config.breadcrumbs; // the current trail, readable

restore() is the right thing to call after an operation that finished a flow, rather than pushing a new action that duplicates a breadcrumb entry.

doAction is async

await this.action.doAction(...);
// now the action has been handled

Awaiting matters when you want to do something after, and especially when the next line would otherwise race with a view swap.

What is next

Registries: how Odoo finds the component, service, field or view you added.
