Odoo Community Edition

All 139 of our Odoo modules run on Odoo Community.

Odoo Community is open source ERP software you can run on your own terms: on premise, self hosted, or on Odoo cloud hosting. There is no Odoo licence fee on Community, which is the whole point, and no Odoo license to renew. This page is about what that actually gets you and where it stops.

Not one of them needs an Odoo Enterprise subscription. That does not make Community the right answer for every business, so this page says plainly what Community leaves out, who should pay for Enterprise anyway, and what it takes to change your mind later.

The decision, without the sales pitch

Community and Enterprise share a core. Same ORM, same models, same fields, same business logic, same API for custom modules. Enterprise is that core plus a set of extra applications, a different backend look, the official mobile apps, Studio, and Odoo hosting and support, sold as a per-user annual subscription.

So the question is never whether the core is good enough. It is whether you need the extra applications, and whether a partner covers what you do need for less than the subscription costs you at your seat count.

We do not print Odoo's prices here. They move by region, by contract and by the apps you take, and a number on a consultancy page ages badly. Get the current figure for your seat count from Odoo or from us, then read the two lists below and put them side by side.

What we cover on Community

139 modules across 19 categories. Every one installs on a plain Community database and none of them depends on an Enterprise application. 47 say Community in their own description, usually because they exist to close a gap Community has.

Counted at build time from the module catalogue, so this page and the modules cannot say different things. Every module page is written from that module's own manifest: browse all 139.

What Community does not give you

This is the part most partners skip. Read it before you commit to either edition.

Studio

The no-code editor for views, fields, reports and automations. Community has no equivalent. The same changes get made in module code by a developer, which is more durable and less immediate. If you want an administrator changing a form on a Tuesday afternoon without calling anyone, that is a real reason to pay for Enterprise.

The official mobile apps

The iOS and Android apps come with Enterprise. Community gives you the responsive web client in a phone browser. It works, people use it every day, and it is not the same as an installed app with push notifications.

Several apps that exist only in Enterprise

Documents, Sign, Planning, Field Service, Marketing Automation, Social Marketing, Helpdesk, Appraisals, Approvals, Quality, Barcode, IoT, VoIP. If two or more of those sit in the middle of how you work, Enterprise is probably the cheaper answer before you count anything else.

Accounting beyond Invoicing

Community ships Invoicing. Bank statement synchronization, follow-up automation, deferred revenue and asset depreciation are Enterprise. Part of that gap can be filled with modules, part of it is not worth filling, and which is which depends on your close process.

Four view types

Gantt, cohort, map and dashboard views are Enterprise. A Community screen that wants to be a Gantt chart ends up as a list, a calendar, or a view somebody has to build.

Odoo hosting and the Odoo support desk

Odoo Online and Odoo.sh both require an Enterprise subscription, and so does support direct from Odoo. Community runs on your server or on ours. That is a change of supplier rather than a missing feature, but it is a decision you make on day one, not later.

That list is not everything, and Odoo moves applications between editions between versions. We check the current version's application list against your actual process before anyone commits to an edition. If something you depend on is Enterprise-only in the version you are installing, you hear it at that point, not after go-live.

A gap we close

A fixed asset register that keeps its own books. Odoo Community has no asset management at all, so depreciation is usually kept in a spreadsheet and typed into the ledger by hand. This puts it back in Odoo.

A gap we close

Brings the full Odoo 19 Enterprise look & feel to Community Edition.

Look and feel only. It does not give you Studio, the mobile apps, or any Enterprise application.

Who should pick which

Pay for Enterprise
  • Someone who does not write code needs to change forms and reports themselves. That is Studio.
  • Field staff live on their phones and a browser tab is not enough.
  • Two or more Enterprise-only applications sit in the middle of your process.
  • You want Odoo hosting and supporting you directly, with no partner in between.
  • You have no developer, no partner, and no appetite for finding one.
Pick Community
  • You have a partner or an in-house developer, so a code change is routine rather than an event.
  • Your workflow is unusual enough that it needs real modules on either edition.
  • You want to read and change every line of what runs your business.
  • Per-user cost scales badly for you: many light users, several entities, or seasonal headcount.
  • You are building a product on top of Odoo, not only running your own business on it.
Honestly, either
  • Small team, standard sales, purchase, stock and invoicing, nothing exotic.
  • Both editions will run your business. The choice is who you would rather pay, and for what.
  • Work out the subscription for your seat count, put it next to a partner's setup and support, then pick.
  • Ask us and we will do that arithmetic with you, including the times the answer is Enterprise.

Changing your mind later

Community to Enterprise

Same database, same data. The Enterprise modules install on top and the extra applications appear. Custom modules written for Community keep working, because they were written against the same core. The real work is the subscription, moving hosting if you go to Odoo Online or Odoo.sh, and retesting your customizations against the Enterprise theme and against any app you have been duplicating.

Enterprise to Community

There is no one-click route back. The data stays in the database, but every Enterprise-only application has to be replaced or retired first, and anything built in Studio has to become real module code before the Enterprise modules are removed. We have done it for clients who were paying for applications nobody opened. It is a project rehearsed on a copy, not a switch you flip on a Friday.

Either direction gets scoped, rehearsed on a clone, and cut over on a date you choose: Odoo Migration & Upgrade.

Community questions we get asked

Is Odoo Community free? +

The code is open source and there is no per-user license fee. Hosting, implementation, training, support and any paid module are not free. Community removes one line from the budget, not the budget.

Do your modules need an Odoo Enterprise subscription? +

No. All 139 of them install on a plain Community database and none depends on an Enterprise application. 47 say Community in their own description, usually because they exist to close a gap Community has.

What does Community genuinely not include? +

Studio, the official iOS and Android apps, Accounting beyond Invoicing, the Gantt, cohort, map and dashboard view types, Odoo Online and Odoo.sh hosting with support direct from Odoo, and several apps that exist only in Enterprise: Documents, Sign, Planning, Field Service, Marketing Automation, Social Marketing, Helpdesk, Appraisals, Approvals, Quality, Barcode, IoT, VoIP. Odoo moves things between editions between versions, so check that list against the exact version you are installing.

Is Community production ready? +

It is the same ORM, the same models and the same business logic that Enterprise runs on top of. What differs is which applications are installed, how the backend looks, and who answers when something breaks at month end. Treat the last one as the real question.

When should we pay for Enterprise instead? +

When someone who does not write code has to change forms and reports themselves, when the official mobile apps matter to field staff, when two or more Enterprise-only apps are central to your process, or when you want Odoo hosting and supporting you directly. In those cases Enterprise is the cheaper answer and we will say so.

Can we start on Community and move to Enterprise later? +

Yes. Same database, same data, with the Enterprise modules installed on top. The other direction has no one-click route: every Enterprise-only application has to be replaced or retired, and anything built in Studio has to become module code, before the Enterprise modules come out. Both directions are a project rehearsed on a copy, not a switch.

Tell us what you run and we will tell you which edition to buy

Your seat count, the apps you actually use, and whether anyone on your side writes code. That is enough for a straight recommendation, and sometimes the recommendation is Enterprise.
