Hire goods out through the ordinary website shop. A rentable product carries a date range picker instead of a plain Add to cart, the period is priced from a rate card, and the units are held the moment the hire goes in the cart so the last one cannot be sold to two people at once.
The booking panel
- โ A pickup and a return field on the product page, with the rate card shown next to them so a visitor can see what a day and a week cost before picking anything
- โ Check dates and price gives a full breakdown: the period, the rate that applies, the charge per unit, the total and the deposit
- โ The shop says how much is free for the exact window asked for, not for the day
- โ Server rendered pages and plain form posts throughout, with JavaScript limited to the date picker
Availability that holds up
- โ The figure is worked out on the server every time, and it is the only figure anything is allowed to trust
- โ Units sitting in somebody else's cart are counted, so two visitors racing for the last one cannot both check out
- โ A cart hold lapses after a configurable number of minutes and the units go back on the market on their own
- โ Back to back hires do not clash: a return at ten o'clock frees the unit for a pickup at ten o'clock
- โ The order is checked again at confirmation, so an order that can no longer be honoured never reaches the confirmed state
- โ Blackout periods take units out of the pool for servicing or a shutdown week, with no order behind them
- โ The pool is either a fixed number of units per product or the quantity on hand
Pricing the period
- โ A rate card per product: so many hours, days, weeks or months for so much money
- โ The rate covering the requested period for the least money wins, so ten days are charged as two weeks when that is cheaper
- โ Part periods round up to a whole block, which is how hire is quoted
- โ A rate priced at zero is skipped, so a half typed rate card cannot give the goods away
- โ A product with no rate at all falls back to the sales price per started day, or can be left unbookable
- โ Where the Rental Management module is installed its rate cards are read too, and where it is not this module works on its own
Through the checkout and afterwards
- โ Every rental line carries its period in its own description, so the dates show in the cart, at checkout, on the order confirmation, on the invoice and in the portal
- โ The cart carries a hire summary listing each period and its charge
- โ A security deposit rides on a line of its own and is never mixed into the hire charge
- โ My Rentals in the customer portal lists what is out, when it was collected and when it is due back
- โ A booking sheet to print for the yard, with a place for both signatures
In the back office
- โ A rental diary as a calendar, a list and a pivot
- โ Every hold with its order, its window and whether it still counts
- โ A wizard to release, extend or confirm a pile of holds at once
- โ Store settings per website: default times, notice required, shortest and longest hire, booking horizon, how long a cart holds stock and whether a visitor has to sign in
- โ Company scoped record rules on every model
- โ Requires the eCommerce app.
