Tax rules that shape an Odoo configuration in Egypt
Each item below is one thing the tax setup has to get right before go-live.
- 1
The standard VAT rate is 14% and applies to all goods and services, with limited exceptions. Machinery and equipment carry 5%.
- 2
VAT returns are filed monthly and must be submitted within one month following the end of the reporting period. Payment falls due at the same time as the return.
- 3
Withholding tax applies to local payments above EGP 300: 1.0% on contracting and supplying, 3.0% on all types of services and 5.0% on commissions. These are advance corporate tax payments, not an extra cost, so the ERP must track them as recoverable against the CIT liability.
- 4
Payments to non-residents carry 20% withholding on royalties and on service payments. Dividends to non-resident corporate shareholders are 10% for unlisted shares and 5% for shares listed on the EGX, before treaty relief.
- 5
The corporate income tax return is due within four months of the financial year end.
The reporting framework your Egypt books sit inside
What your statements have to comply with, and what that means for the chart of accounts.
- 1
Egypt has not adopted IFRS. Financial statements follow Egyptian Accounting Standards (EAS). Each standard or change is made by ministerial decree and published in the Egyptian Gazette, developed by a standard setting committee chaired by the chairman of the Financial Regulatory Authority.
- 2
EAS is close to IFRS but not identical and not as complete. Two differences bite in an ERP: employees' profit sharing is recognised as an equity distribution rather than an expense in profit or loss, and a different model applies to the effect of currency devaluation. EAS also does not allow some IFRS options, including presenting a single statement of comprehensive income.
- 3
The practical consequence for an Odoo build is that the default IFRS-shaped profit and loss and the employee profit share posting both need reworking. Odoo's l10n_eg gives a chart of accounts and taxes, not an EAS-compliant presentation.

Rates, formats, thresholds and submission windows change. We configure against the rules in force at build time and confirm every figure with your accountant or tax advisor before sign-off. If a rule moves after go-live, it is a support ticket, not a rebuild. Read more on our Odoo localization service.
How we build accounting and tax for Egypt
The delivery method behind the list above. The same four steps on a 10-user rollout and on a multi-company programme, with the depth scaled to the scope.
- 1 Chart of accounts from your accountant. We configure against the mapping your accountant signs, not a default template someone picked in the install wizard.
- 2 Every tax gets a test document. An invoice, a credit note and a period report per tax, checked against a figure your accountant produced independently.
- 3 Opening balances reconcile. Prior-period data is loaded and tied back to your last filed set of accounts before anyone posts a live transaction.
- 4 Filing outputs come out of Odoo. Reports are produced from the system, checked line by line, then handed over with a written procedure so your team runs them without us.
What we need from you to quote it
Bring these to the first call and you get a scoped, priced accounting and tax plan for Egypt instead of a range.
- โ Your current chart of accounts and the tax codes in use today.
- โ The last filed set of accounts and the last filed return.
- โ The name of the accountant or tax advisor who signs off the configuration.
