Tax rules that shape an Odoo configuration in Canada
Each item below is one thing the tax setup has to get right before go-live.
- 1
GST is 5%. In HST provinces a single combined tax applies instead: 13% in Ontario, 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and 14% in Nova Scotia.
- 2
Quebec charges QST at 9.975% on top of the 5% GST. British Columbia and Manitoba charge 7% PST, Saskatchewan 6%. Alberta and the three territories have no retail sales tax. An Odoo setup therefore needs province-driven fiscal positions, not one tax.
- 3
The GST/HST registration threshold is CAD 30,000 of sales to Canadian consumers annually.
- 4
Filing frequency follows annual taxable revenue: annual up to CAD 1.5 million, quarterly from CAD 1.5 million to CAD 6 million, monthly above CAD 6 million. Monthly and quarterly returns are due one month after period end; annual returns three months after fiscal year end.
- 5
Regulation 105 requires 15% withholding on fees, commissions and other service payments to a non-resident for work performed in Canada, unless a waiver is obtained beforehand. This has to be modelled on vendor bills.
The reporting framework your Canada books sit inside
What your statements have to comply with, and what that means for the chart of accounts.

Corporations file their balance sheet and income statement with the T2 return using CRA General Index of Financial Information (GIFI) codes, carried on schedules 100 (balance sheet) and 125 (income statement). Design the chart of accounts with a GIFI mapping from day one or the year-end becomes a manual re-coding exercise.

There is no government-mandated chart of accounts and no SAF-T style audit file export. Odoo ships its own Canadian chart of accounts with seven account groups: Receivable, Payable, Equity, Assets, Liability, Income, Expenses.
Unconfirmed. Sources agreed, no primary confirmation found.

Accounting records supporting a GST/HST position must be kept for 6 years from the end of the fiscal year, with integrity and availability preserved.

Rates, formats, thresholds and submission windows change. We configure against the rules in force at build time and confirm every figure with your accountant or tax advisor before sign-off. If a rule moves after go-live, it is a support ticket, not a rebuild. Read more on our Odoo localization service.
How we build accounting and tax for Canada
The delivery method behind the list above. The same four steps on a 10-user rollout and on a multi-company programme, with the depth scaled to the scope.
- 1 Chart of accounts from your accountant. We configure against the mapping your accountant signs, not a default template someone picked in the install wizard.
- 2 Every tax gets a test document. An invoice, a credit note and a period report per tax, checked against a figure your accountant produced independently.
- 3 Opening balances reconcile. Prior-period data is loaded and tied back to your last filed set of accounts before anyone posts a live transaction.
- 4 Filing outputs come out of Odoo. Reports are produced from the system, checked line by line, then handed over with a written procedure so your team runs them without us.
What we need from you to quote it
Bring these to the first call and you get a scoped, priced accounting and tax plan for Canada instead of a range.
- โ Your current chart of accounts and the tax codes in use today.
- โ The last filed set of accounts and the last filed return.
- โ The name of the accountant or tax advisor who signs off the configuration.
