Tax rules that shape an Odoo configuration in India
Each item below is one thing the tax setup has to get right before go-live.
- 1
GST is the indirect tax. Since 22 September 2025 the structure is essentially two slabs, 5% and 18%, with 18% as the standard rate. The 12% and 28% slabs were removed and a 40% demerit rate now applies to a defined list of luxury and sin supplies.

The change was given effect by notifications 9/2025 to 17/2025 Central Tax (Rate) and the matching Integrated Tax (Rate) notifications, all dated 17 September 2025 and effective 22 September 2025. Compensation cess on motor vehicles and caffeinated beverages was reduced to nil at the same time.

Filing runs on GSTR-1 for outward supplies and GSTR-3B to discharge the liability, with GSTR-2B as the input credit statement. Odoo's Indian accounting reports module produces GSTR-1, GSTR-2B and GSTR-3B.

From 1 October 2025 any GST return whose due date is more than three years old is permanently barred from filing. It covers GSTR-1, GSTR-1A, GSTR-3B, GSTR-4 through GSTR-8 and GSTR-9/9C, under the Finance Act 2023 and notification 28/2023 Central Tax. Old open periods can no longer be cleaned up after go-live.

TCS on sale of goods under section 206C(1H) was omitted with effect from 1 April 2025. TDS on purchase of goods under section 194Q, at 0.1%, still applies on the buyer side. An ERP still configured to collect 206C(1H) is now producing wrong documents.

The equalisation levy on online advertising and digital advertising space was abolished with effect from 1 April 2025.
The reporting framework your India books sit inside
What your statements have to comply with, and what that means for the chart of accounts.

Every company registered under the Companies Act 2013 must keep its books in accounting software that records an audit trail and edit log for every transaction, under rule 3(1) of the Companies (Accounts) Rules 2014, effective from 1 April 2023. It covers small companies, one person companies, dormant companies, Section 8 not-for-profits and foreign companies. LLPs, partnerships and proprietorships are outside it.
- 2
The audit trail must stay enabled and cannot be switched off. The statutory auditor reports on it under rule 11(g) of the Companies (Audit and Auditors) Rules 2014, covering whether the feature ran all year, whether it was tampered with, and whether the trail was preserved. Records are held eight years under section 128(5) of the Companies Act 2013.

Odoo's Indian localization carries GSTIN verification of partners, TDS and TCS threshold alerts with account suggestions, and the ability to fetch vendor e-invoices already filed on the GST portal. That covers most of the routine statutory bookkeeping load.
Checked Localization notes on this page checked on 22 August 2026.
Rates, formats, thresholds and submission windows change. We configure against the rules in force at build time and confirm every figure with your accountant or tax advisor before sign-off. If a rule moves after go-live, it is a support ticket, not a rebuild. Read more on our Odoo localization service.
How we build accounting and tax for India
The delivery method behind the list above. The same four steps on a 10-user rollout and on a multi-company programme, with the depth scaled to the scope.
- 1 Chart of accounts from your accountant. We configure against the mapping your accountant signs, not a default template someone picked in the install wizard.
- 2 Every tax gets a test document. An invoice, a credit note and a period report per tax, checked against a figure your accountant produced independently.
- 3 Opening balances reconcile. Prior-period data is loaded and tied back to your last filed set of accounts before anyone posts a live transaction.
- 4 Filing outputs come out of Odoo. Reports are produced from the system, checked line by line, then handed over with a written procedure so your team runs them without us.
What we need from you to quote it
Bring these to the first call and you get a scoped, priced accounting and tax plan for India instead of a range.
- โ Your current chart of accounts and the tax codes in use today.
- โ The last filed set of accounts and the last filed return.
- โ The name of the accountant or tax advisor who signs off the configuration.
