Odoo accounting and tax in Australia

Every Australia tax and accounting item we configure and test before a go-live, printed in full rather than condensed.

Tax rules that shape an Odoo configuration in Australia

Each item below is one thing the tax setup has to get right before go-live.

  1. 1

GST is 10% on most goods, services and other items sold or consumed in Australia. The federal government levies it and distributes the revenue to the states.

  2. 2

GST registration is compulsory at AUD 75,000 GST turnover, AUD 150,000 for non-profits, and from the first dollar for taxi, limousine and ride-sourcing operators and for anyone claiming fuel tax credits. You have 21 days to register once you know you will cross the threshold.

  3. 3

GST and PAYG withholding are reported on the Business Activity Statement. BAS due dates can be quarterly, monthly or yearly depending on the taxpayer, and the ATO assigns the cycle.

  4. 4

Payroll tax is a state tax, not federal, so an Australian Odoo build has to carry per-state rates and thresholds. New South Wales is 5.45% with an AUD 1,200,000 annual exemption threshold; Victoria is 4.85% general and 1.2125% for regional employers with an AUD 1 million threshold from 1 July 2025.

  5. 5

PAYG instalments: all companies with turnover of AUD 20 million or more pay monthly, most others monthly or quarterly. Companies with annual tax below AUD 8,000 that are not GST-registered are outside the instalment system. Small and medium businesses may opt into monthly reporting and payment from 1 July 2027.

The reporting framework your Australia books sit inside

What your statements have to comply with, and what that means for the chart of accounts.

  1. 1

Accounting standards are made by the Australian Accounting Standards Board, a government agency, under section 334 of the Corporations Act 2001.

  2. 2

Disclosing entities, registered schemes and registrable superannuation entities lodge complete financial reports with ASIC within three months after financial year end. All other entities have four months. Lodgement uses Form 388 unless the entity lodges with ASX, NSX, Cboe Australia or SSX instead.

  3. 3

Entities required to lodge include disclosing entities, public companies, companies limited by guarantee other than small ones, large proprietary companies, registered schemes, registrable superannuation entities, foreign-controlled small proprietary companies, and small proprietary companies with crowd-sourced funding shareholders.

  4. 4

There is no statutory chart of accounts and no SAF-T style audit file. Odoo's l10n_au ships its own Australian chart of accounts and GST tax set.

Rates, formats, thresholds and submission windows change. We configure against the rules in force at build time and confirm every figure with your accountant or tax advisor before sign-off. If a rule moves after go-live, it is a support ticket, not a rebuild. Read more on our Odoo localization service.

How we build accounting and tax for Australia

The delivery method behind the list above. The same four steps on a 10-user rollout and on a multi-company programme, with the depth scaled to the scope.

  1. 1 Chart of accounts from your accountant. We configure against the mapping your accountant signs, not a default template someone picked in the install wizard.
  2. 2 Every tax gets a test document. An invoice, a credit note and a period report per tax, checked against a figure your accountant produced independently.
  3. 3 Opening balances reconcile. Prior-period data is loaded and tied back to your last filed set of accounts before anyone posts a live transaction.
  4. 4 Filing outputs come out of Odoo. Reports are produced from the system, checked line by line, then handed over with a written procedure so your team runs them without us.

What we need from you to quote it

Bring these to the first call and you get a scoped, priced accounting and tax plan for Australia instead of a range.

  • โœ“ Your current chart of accounts and the tax codes in use today.
  • โœ“ The last filed set of accounts and the last filed return.
  • โœ“ The name of the accountant or tax advisor who signs off the configuration.
